English Technical Overview

The machining differences between SUS304, SUS316 and SUS316L cannot be reduced to a ranking in which more expensive stainless steel is harder and therefore more difficult to cut. Molybdenum in the SUS316 family improves resistance to chloride-induced localized corrosion. The lower carbon content of SUS316L is important for reducing intergranular-corrosion risk associated with welding thermal cycles. Tool life and finished-part cost also depend on the supplied material condition, inclusions, removal volume, component stiffness and surface requirements.

SUS304 is a starting point when evaluating cost efficiency in general environments. The SUS316 family merits consideration when chloride exposure is significant. SUS316L is a priority when post-weld corrosion resistance is also required. The 316L designation alone, however, does not guarantee seawater suitability, weld quality or long tool life.

Composition and Grade Identification

All three grades are chromium–nickel austenitic stainless steels. Chromium supports formation of the passive surface film, while nickel contributes to austenite stability. SUS316 and SUS316L also contain molybdenum. The L in SUS316L means low carbon; it does not certify free-machining behavior or low hardness.

The table summarizes major composition ranges for JIS-corresponding grades published by a steelmaker. Values are mass percentages, with the balance primarily iron. Incoming acceptance must use the complete requirements of the product standard and edition specified in the purchase order, together with the material certificate—not this summary alone.

SUS316L and ASTM Type 316L should not be treated as fully interchangeable merely because their names are similar. Published ASTM-family data can specify 10–14% nickel for 316L, differing from the JIS-corresponding range above. Substitution approval requires comparison of the applicable plate, bar or tube specification, chemistry, mechanical properties and heat-treatment condition.

Dual certification as 316/316L means that the supplier certifies compliance with both sets of requirements. Machining or passivating an arbitrary 316 bar does not turn it into 316L. For elevated-temperature loading or pressure design, review the relevant design-code allowable stresses and temperature conditions rather than relying on room-temperature hardness.

Corrosion in Chlorides, Crevices and Welded Regions

A useful corrosion comparison begins by separating corrosion modes. Unlike general corrosion, which removes material relatively uniformly, pitting produces deep attack at localized sites. Crevice corrosion becomes important beneath gaskets, at overlapping threaded joints and under deposits where solution exchange with the surroundings is restricted.

Molybdenum in the SUS316 family is especially beneficial against this type of chloride-induced localized attack. Chloride concentration is not the only variable: temperature, pH, oxidizing species, stagnation time and residual cleaning solution also matter. Even a low bulk chloride concentration can become a different local environment when evaporation and deposits concentrate the solution inside a crevice.

The benefit of SUS316L lies on a separate axis. Welding thermal cycles can produce chromium carbides at grain boundaries and leave adjacent regions depleted in chromium, increasing susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. Lower carbon reduces that risk. It does not correct inadequate weld shielding, retained oxides or poor crevice design.

Warm seawater, high chlorides or prolonged stagnationCompare materials beyond these three gradesPitting, crevice corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking

Stress-corrosion cracking involves tensile stress acting together with a particular corrosive environment. Residual stresses from machining, forming or welding therefore remain relevant even when external loading is small. Neither salt-spray test duration nor a composition index should be converted directly into equipment service life. Final assessment needs to represent the actual fluid, temperature, joints and cleaning conditions.

Bar Stock, Hollow Stock and Material Lots

The cost structure differs between drilling a large bore entirely from solid bar and finishing the bore of hollow stock, even for the same drawing. Hollow stock can reduce removal volume and lengthy drilling. Its eccentricity, supply tolerances, required finishing allowance and available sizes must first be checked. Comparing only price per kilogram overlooks cutting time and the metal discarded as chips.

For an axisymmetric through-bored component such as a thin sanitary weld ferrule, the datum relationship between bore, outside diameter and clamp face is important. The preferred route—solid bar, hollow bar or suitable tube—depends on wall thickness, dimensional tolerances, weld requirements, quantity and traceability. A general-purpose hollow bar cannot automatically replace pressure-service tube simply because the alloy designation matches.

Material-lot control connects the specified standard with the heat number, supply condition and actual chemistry and mechanical properties on the certificate. Cold-drawn and solution-treated stock can differ in residual stress and hardness. Substantial material removal can reveal these differences as bending or changes in roundness. Scale and peeled-surface condition also affect wear during the first cut.

Handheld XRF can be useful for screening the 304 and 316 families through their molybdenum content, but conventional handheld XRF cannot measure carbon. It therefore cannot establish the low-carbon requirement distinguishing 316L from 316 by itself. First connect the certificate with the heat identity. If carbon verification is required, specify an appropriate carbon-capable analytical method and testing laboratory.

Cutting Heat, Work Hardening and Built-Up Edge

Austenitic stainless steels are ductile, prone to work hardening and generally less thermally conductive than carbon steels. Heat around the cutting edge, high contact pressure and difficult-to-break chips link tool wear with surface damage. This is why cutting conditions for aluminum or ordinary free-machining steel cannot be transferred on the basis of stock hardness alone.

Work hardening is an increase in resistance to deformation caused by plastic strain; it is not quench hardening caused by cutting heat. A blunt edge rubbing the surface, or repeated excessively thin cuts, can make the next edge pass through an already deformed surface layer. Continually reducing feed may then make matters worse by replacing cutting with more rubbing.

A built-up edge forms when workpiece material adheres to the cutting edge and temporarily acts as part of the edge. Its repeated attachment and detachment changes effective geometry and cutting force, potentially leaving torn areas or deposits on the part. If built-up edge is the cause, review geometry, coating, lubrication and cutting-speed range together instead of automatically lowering speed.

Conversely, edge deformation under heat and load, or rapidly growing flank wear, can call for lower speed and thermal loading. The same symptom of a poor surface can therefore require opposite speed adjustments. Preserve evidence of deposits, wear location and fracture shape before cleaning or regrinding the tool.

CNC Turning Conditions and Tool Selection

When transferring established SUS304 conditions to SUS316 or SUS316L, check the tool’s application range rather than its name alone. Review ISO M geometry, coating and substrate, the chipbreaker’s feed/depth range, actual stock hardness and interrupted-cut conditions. A sharp geometry that lowers cutting force can help thin walls. Edge strength and toughness can become more important under interrupted entry or impact.

Cutting speed is the relative speed between edge and workpiece, expressed in m/min; it is not spindle speed in rpm. At a diameter of 50 mm, 120 m/min corresponds to approximately 764 rpm. At 25 mm, maintaining the same cutting speed requires approximately 1,528 rpm. This is a unit-conversion example, not a recommended cutting condition for the material.

Constant-surface-speed facing raises spindle speed toward the center. Set a maximum speed appropriate to the workpiece, chuck and holder. Keep turning feed in mm/rev distinct from milling feed per tooth in mm/tooth. Feed and depth should fall within the chipbreaker’s effective range without imposing forces beyond the remaining wall thickness and workholding stiffness.

Separate roughing, which removes volume stably without unnecessary rubbing, from finishing, which benefits from uniform remaining stock and predictable loading. Minimize tool overhang; use a boring bar as large and short as practical. Check edge height and debris in the insert seat. A larger nose radius can reduce theoretical feed marks but increase radial force and chatter, potentially harming thin components.

Assess coolant by more than pressure. Verify delivery location and flow at the edge, concentration and filtration. In grooving, parting and internal machining, chip-exit space and jet direction are especially important. Increasing pump pressure behind a blocked nozzle does not improve edge lubrication or chip evacuation.

Tool-Life Comparison and a 316L Lot Study

Comparing tool life only by part count mixes differences in cutting length, engagement time and hole count. Record cumulative cutting time per edge as well as acceptable parts. State whether replacement is triggered by flank wear, dimensional deviation, roughness, burrs or edge fracture. An unbroken tool has reached its useful process life if it no longer meets sealing-face requirements.

A turning study compared two 316L materials from different suppliers using uncoated WC–Co tools, 0.08 mm/rev feed, 1 mm depth and 6% emulsion. Material A reached approximately 0.3 mm maximum flank wear after about 15 minutes at 120 m/min and 5 minutes at 160 m/min. Material B remained below 0.075 mm at the same observation times at both speeds.

B was harder—180 HV versus 154 HV for A—yet produced less wear. The study identified differences in oxide inclusions and protective transfer layers on the tool as important factors. This contradicts a simple assumption that harder 316L must always shorten tool life.

These numbers are neither guaranteed production life for coated inserts nor a life multiplier relative to SUS304. They concern two particular 316L materials and a specific experimental tool, and do not establish B’s final failure time. The practical implication is to separate grade comparisons from supplier-lot comparisons and repeat trials using matching geometry, tools, cooling and replacement criteria.

MCT Milling, Holemaking and Threading

SUS316L that turns stably can present different bottlenecks when an MCT machines deep pockets, small holes and threads. With rotating tools, entry and exit of each edge, changes in engagement around corners and chip recutting must be managed together. The same programmed feed does not impose the same actual edge load along a straight path and inside a corner.

Evaluate milling feed per tooth together with radial engagement and axial depth. Ignoring chip thinning at small radial engagement can promote rubbing. A sudden increase in engagement at a corner can sharply raise load. Manage entry paths and corner feed within the machine and tool application limits. On CNC equipment with controlled backlash, assess the suitability of climb milling.

For drilling, check entry-face inclination, pre-existing holes, runout and depth-to-diameter ratio. Greater depth increases chip travel and friction. Inspect internal scratches and packed chips as well as exit burrs. Rather than automatically adding more pecks or dwelling at the bottom, follow the drill manufacturer’s cooling and re-entry strategy to maintain effective cutting.

Separate through-hole from blind-hole threading. Spiral-point taps for through holes generally push chips forward, while spiral-flute taps for blind holes draw chips toward the entrance; their intended applications should not be interchanged. Review effective thread depth, clearance for the drill point, tap lead length and bottom chip space at the drawing stage.

Thread milling offers a different way to manage chips and tool-breakage risk, but access and cycle time can become burdensome at small diameters. Form taps avoid chips but require suitable material ductility, a dedicated pre-hole size, torque capacity and lubrication. Moving beyond the statement that stainless breaks taps means separately checking hole size, alignment, chip direction and lubrication before comparing process alternatives.

Thin-Wall Distortion and Process Datums

A ferrule’s thin cylindrical neck, a flange’s sealing face and a valve component’s deep bore can be more sensitive to workholding and process sequence than to the alloy name. If a bore is round in the chuck but becomes oval after release, investigate clamping distortion before changing tool offsets. Absence of visible clamp marks does not demonstrate absence of deformation.

Design soft jaws and supports to provide adequate contact length and suitable contact locations without heavily loading thin functional surfaces. Where appropriate, retain wall thickness during roughing, establish re-clamping datums, then plan the finishing relationship between bore, outside diameter and end face. Supports and expanding mandrels can also stretch a part through contact pressure; installing them is not automatically a solution.

Decide process separation from functional requirements. If perpendicularity between sealing face and bore, or coaxiality between inner and outer features, is important, plan machining and inspection around a common datum where practical. When flipping a part, specify how the previous datum is recovered and how burrs and chips are removed from locating surfaces.

Measuring the first article both clamped and released helps separate causes. Check roundness, flatness and runout after temperature stabilization, keeping measurement positions and directions consistent. Sustained dimensional trends over tool usage are more informative for production readiness than one acceptable first article.

Diagnosing Tool Wear and Machining Defects

When a problem appears, identify the dominant damage mode before changing material, speed, feed and tool simultaneously. Use a tool microscope or suitable magnification to distinguish flank, rake-face and depth-of-cut-boundary wear. Connect these observations with dimensions and surface condition at that time. The table is a guide to the next diagnostic check, not a definitive assignment of cause.

ObservationPossible causal connectionPriority checks and adjustment direction
Flank wear and progressive size driftCumulative friction/heat or unsuitable tool gradeEngagement time, speed, tool grade and coolant delivery
Localized depth-of-cut notchWork-hardened surface, entry conditions and localized wearStock surface, changes in depth/location and edge toughness

Long chips and surface scratchesOperation outside chipbreaker range or chip recuttingFeed/depth combination, jet direction and exit space
Acceptable hot size but unacceptable cold sizeThermal expansion or inconsistent reference temperaturePart/gauge temperatures, stabilization and offset history

A condition that lowers wear does not always increase productivity. A large speed reduction may extend edge life in minutes but produce fewer acceptable parts during that time. Added machine time can then exceed the tool saving. Conversely, higher speed can reduce total cost when tolerances remain stable to the replacement point and downtime decreases.

Trial records should therefore include chip removal, insert changes, offsets, deburring and reinspection, not only normal cutting time. A repeatable production time and replacement rule—not the shortest isolated cycle—provide the basis for a realistic quotation.

Surface Texture, Dimensions and Cleanliness

Gloss is not a substitute for surface texture, form accuracy or cleanliness. A reflective stainless surface can still contain directional tool marks, local tearing and folded burrs. For sealing faces, assess deep scratches, lay direction, flatness and contact with the mating component as well as Ra.

Comparable roughness measurements depend more on a consistent evaluation method than on the instrument name. Match the specified parameter, filter, evaluation length and measuring direction. Check whether lay orientation changes the result. Separately judge whether a reading near the bore entrance can represent the entire deeper internal surface.

Manage dimensions together with temperature. As an illustration, assuming a thermal-expansion coefficient of 16.5 µm/(m·K), a 100 mm part that is 20°C warmer changes length by approximately 0.033 mm. The coefficient represents the magnitude reported for a particular product; actual compensation requires the material’s temperature-dependent properties and the measuring system. This explains why immediately accepting a hot first article can be problematic with tolerances of tens of micrometers.

Bore diameter, roundness and cylindricity are different characteristics. A passing two-point diameter does not exclude lobing or axial form error. Select measurement methods by function, and clarify whether the drawing requires the released condition or the assembled condition.

Cleanliness inspection addresses residual chips, coolant, abrasive and iron contamination. Small residues can affect function and cleanability in hygienic or vacuum components. Treat cleaning, rinsing, drying and packaging after deburring as one controlled process. The measurement concepts are developed further in CNC surface texture: Ra, Rz, Rt, drawing and inspection criteria.

Post-Weld Finishing and Passivation

Low-carbon SUS316L and surface finishing do not replace one another. Low carbon is a material choice that reduces risks from welding-related microstructural changes. Cleaning and oxide removal address surface conditions damaged during fabrication. Merely upgrading the alloy while retaining root oxidation or heat tint can leave expected corrosion performance unrealized.

Pickling targets oxide scale and chromium-depleted surface layers. Passivation is used to remove light iron contamination and establish a suitable passive condition. Ordinary passivation should not be treated as a heavy weld-oxide removal process. Electropolishing is a separate electrochemical removal and smoothing operation, considered according to cleanliness and surface requirements.

A finishing purchase specification should identify treated surfaces, pre-treatment condition, protected dimensions and threads, rinsing, drying and completion checks—not just the process name. Material-removing treatments can affect edges and precision dimensions, so define when final inspection occurs. Chemical treatment conditions belong in approved procedures operated by specialist facilities.

Iron transferred from carbon-steel brushes, shared abrasives or contaminated benches can create rust problems on stainless surfaces. Reduce contamination routes from machining through finishing and packaging. Use suitable dedicated contact surfaces and storage that do not recontaminate cleaned parts. Where required, conduct specified surface-cleanliness tests separately from validation in the actual service environment.

Material Price and Cost per Acceptable Part

Nickel, molybdenum, production route, certification and supply specification influence SUS316 and SUS316L stock prices. They do not justify a universal surcharge on finished parts. Compare quotations issued on the same date for matching quantities and specifications. Separate cutting allowance, remnants and recoverable scrap from actual input mass. For large-bore components, stock-form selection can matter more than the grade difference.

Cost per acceptable part should relate actual input cost to the final accepted quantity. Use the same scope for material, setup, machine occupancy, tools, inspection, cleaning, outsourced treatment and rework. Avoid counting tool-change downtime twice if it is already included in machine cycle time.

The following calculation assumes 100 input pieces. It is not a market quotation or a grade-specific price comparison. It illustrates sensitivity when a stock route and process stability are improved together. Machine cost is assumed to be KRW 1,000 per minute. Net material cost includes cutting losses and the agreed treatment of remnants and scrap.

For 100 input piecesBaseline routeImprovement scenario
Net material costKRW 400,000KRW 520,000
Machine occupancy and cost800 min · KRW 800,000550 min · KRW 550,000

Total input costKRW 1,500,000KRW 1,340,000
Final acceptable quantity9598
Cost per acceptable partApproximately KRW 15,789Approximately KRW 13,673

In this example, higher material cost is offset by lower machining time and tool cost plus a higher accepted quantity. Cost per acceptable part falls by approximately 13.4%. This is not a fixed price difference between the three grades. Conversely, when cutting time is short and material dominates cost, a more expensive stock route may offer less benefit.

A rational SUS304/SUS316/SUS316L selection first retains candidates meeting required corrosion resistance and certification. It then compares cost per acceptable part at matching function, quantity and inspection scope. A cheaper grade that sacrifices necessary corrosion resistance can increase leakage, replacement and equipment-downtime costs despite a lower initial machining price.

Drawing Requirements, RFQs and Production Approval

An RFQ stating only “SUS316L, hold tolerances” leaves room for different interpretations of material substitution, dimensional datums and finishing scope. The drawing should define function, the purchase order should define material and delivery condition, and the inspection agreement should connect methods with acceptance decisions. Supplying these items together helps distinguish grade-related price differences from differences in inspection or manufacturing route.

Delivery and productionFirst-article quantity, repeat volume, packaging, cleanliness and change-approval scopeStock route, tool-life trial and production price

First-article approval begins with drawing dimensions and surface requirements. Follow this with consecutive production at target conditions to assess wear and dimensional trends. Separately record differences between the first part on a new insert and the part before replacement, shifts after material-lot changes, and changes after cooling or clamp release. Define sample size and test termination criteria so the result’s scope is clear.

When the material supplier, heat-treatment condition, tool grade, coolant method or finishing route changes, revalidate the characteristics that can be affected. Inspection scope depends on whether the change affects dimensions alone or also cleanliness and corrosion resistance. One successful first article should not be generalized to every subsequent material lot and production condition.

SUS304 centers on economy in general environments; SUS316 adds molybdenum-based localized-corrosion resistance; SUS316L adds low-carbon design for welding thermal cycles. Tool life and machining cost require separate validation. Connecting material, drawing, cutting, inspection and finishing makes it possible to select a reliably functional component, not merely a more expensive alloy.

Related process decisions are discussed in CNC versus press processing: cost, accuracy and production quantity. For sheet-focused material selection, see SPCC, SECC and SUS304: machinability and corrosion resistance. For component review, use the product inquiry route with drawings and service conditions.
